Back pain is serious. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality reported that in 2008, for every 100,000 adults ages 18 to 44, 1,569 required emergency room treatment just for back pain.

Neglecting your spine is expensive. According to the AHRQ study, “Inpatient hospital treatments for back pain totaled over 9.5 billion dollars in 2008, making it the 9th most expensive condition treated in U.S. hospitals.”

Back pain is common. According to a 2010 publication from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ National Institutes of Health, “In a 3-month period, about one-fourth of U.S. adults experience at least 1 day of back pain.”

Back pain can disrupt job productivity. In 2007, 28.9% of all nonfatal injuries and illnesses that involved taking day off work were the result of musculoskeletal disorders. In the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s 2004 report, the median number of days taken off work for back injuries was six.
